🧠 What’s the influence of an AI decision support in the final decision of clinicians ? A recent study showed the influence from one to the other.

🏥 Hospitals are increasingly interested in implementing AI-enabled clinical support systems to improve clinical outcomes. However, how AI-generated advice affects physician’s diagnostic decision-making in comparison to human-generated advice has been understudied.

🎞 The researchers provided radiologists (n = 138) and internal/emergency medicine physicians (IM/EM, n = 127) with eight chest X-ray cases and corresponding diagnostic advice that they were told either came from human colleagues or an AI model. The physicians were asked to evaluate advice quality and make final diagnoses.

😰 The study showed that clinical support systems based on AI or more traditional methods could prime physicians to search for confirmatory information in place of conducting a thorough and critical evaluation.

🚨 Even more interestingly, the impact of the advice perception was related to the initial difficulty of analysis. Which is even more concerning.
